Olive to grey-brown body, dusted with darker spots and gold-yellow flecks.

Quick answers

What is the difference between a leucistic and an albino axolotl?

The eyes. A leucistic axolotl ("lucy") is white or pale pink but has DARK (black or navy) eyes; an albino is white or golden with clear, pink or red eyes and no dark pigment anywhere. People very often call a leucistic "albino" by mistake — if the eyes are dark, it is not an albino.

Does an axolotl's morph affect its care?

No. Morph is purely colour and pattern — every axolotl needs the same cold water (16–18°C / 60–64°F), a cycled tank, and fine sand or a bare bottom (never gravel). The only nuance is that pale and albino morphs are a little light-sensitive, so keep the lighting dim and provide shade.

What is a GFP axolotl?

GFP (green fluorescent protein) axolotls glow bright green under a blacklight or UV light. It isn't a colour on its own — the glow gene can sit on top of any morph, so you can have a GFP leucistic, GFP wild type, and so on. In daylight it just looks like its base morph.

What is the rarest axolotl morph?

Mosaic and chimera axolotls are among the rarest — both come from two eggs fusing during development (a mosaic is finely mottled all over; a chimera is split left-to-right into two morphs), and neither can be bred for. "Firefly" axolotls are rarer still but man-made, created by grafting embryonic tissue.
