What are safe water parameters for an axolotl?

Ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm, nitrate under 20 ppm (lower is better), pH 7.0–8.0, and temperature 16–18°C (60–64°F). GH is best kept above 8 dGH and KH around 3–8 dKH for a stable pH.

Any ammonia or nitrite above 0 is harmful and usually means the tank is not fully cycled. Do a large dechlorinated water change now, and if it stays above 0, tub your axolotl in clean cool dechlorinated water with 100% daily changes until the tank reads 0.

No. It interprets your water test, not your animal. If your axolotl looks unwell — curled gills, not eating, fungus, red or damaged skin — check a warning-signs guide and contact an exotics vet. When in doubt, a vet call is never wrong.
