Nuptial pads
Nuptial pads are dark, roughened patches that male frogs, toads and newts grow on their thumbs or forelimbs in breeding condition, used to grip the female during amplexus.
They are one of the clearer signs an amphibian is a sexually mature male. They may only appear seasonally, in breeding condition, so their absence does not prove an animal is female.
