Eft

An eft is the juvenile, land-living stage of a newt — the phase between the aquatic larva and the semi-aquatic adult, when the young newt lives on land with dry, often brightly-coloured skin.

The "red eft" of the eastern newt is the famous example: it spends a few years on land before returning to water as an adult. Getting a newt's water-or-land needs right depends on knowing which stage it is in.
