Water or land?
The salamander & newt setup decision — by species and life stage · updated July 24, 2026
Salamanders and newts are confusing on purpose: some live in water, some on land, and manyswitch as they grow up — a newt spends years on land as an "eft," then goes back to the water. Get it wrong and the animal drowns or dries out. Tell me what you have, and I'll tell you exactly which setup it needs.
💚 This is setup guidance, not a diagnosis. The safety rules (never deep water for a land salamander; always a haul-out for a water newt) are the part that matters most.
This is a starting guide built from cited care sources — a solid baseline, not the last word. Double-check the specifics for your exact species before you rely on it.
