What do African dwarf frogs need in their tank?

A cycled, filtered aquarium of at least 5 gallons per frog, a GENTLE filter (they hate current), a steady 72–78°F (usually a small heater), soft sand or smooth substrate with plants and hides, and surface access — they breathe air. Target-feed sinking foods so tankmates don't out-compete them. Don't confuse them with the much larger African clawed frog.

Do aquatic frogs and salamanders breathe air?

Most do. African dwarf and clawed frogs, Budgett's and Surinam toads, and the aquatic caecilian all surface to breathe air, so they must always be able to reach the surface. Mudpuppies, sirens and amphiumas are permanently gilled and stay fully aquatic. A neotenic "waterdog" tiger salamander is aquatic like an axolotl — but if it metamorphoses it must be able to climb out or it will drown.

Why does water temperature matter so much for aquatic amphibians?

Accepted Answer

Because it is the number-one killer. Cool/cold-water species — mudpuppies, sirens (cool), waterdogs, paddletail and Spanish ribbed newts — overheat and die in warm water and may need a chiller. Tropical species like Budgett's and Surinam toads need a heater. Match the species' range and check it with a thermometer.

Can I keep aquatic frogs with fish?

Accepted Answer

Carefully, and often not. African clawed frogs, Budgett's frogs, Surinam toads, sirens and amphiumas are predators that will eat tankmates small enough to swallow. Budgett's frogs are cannibals and must be kept alone. Even peaceful African dwarf frogs and caecilians get out-competed for food by fast fish, so target-feed them.
