Safety & “is this normal?”
Are captive-bred poison dart frogs poisonous?
No — captive-bred dart frogs are not toxic. Their toxicity in the wild comes from eating specific ants and mites; raised on fruit flies, they never develop it. Wash your hands before and after handling their environment anyway, as with any amphibian.
Why is my dart frog hiding all the time?
New frogs hide for days or weeks while they settle — it’s normal. It also increases if humidity is too low or the tank is too open. Give dense planting, leaf litter, high humidity, and quiet. Worry only if it’s paired with weight loss.
Why won’t my dart frog eat?
Usually temperature or humidity is off, the food’s too big, or it’s newly moved and stressed. Keep temps 72–80°F, humidity high, and offer tiny prey. Toe-tapping is normal hunting behaviour, not a sickness.
My frog looks thin or wobbly — what’s wrong?
Thinness points to husbandry (temp/humidity/feeding); wobbling or seizures usually means a calcium/vitamin deficiency — make sure you’re dusting feeders. Persistent problems warrant an exotics vet.
Vivarium, humidity & temperature
What temperature and humidity do dart frogs need?
72–80°F day (never above ~85°F), ~65°F minimum at night, and 80–100% humidity, in a planted bioactive vivarium misted daily.
Do dart frogs need UVB or heat?
No basking heat — they like it cool and stable. A low-level UVB is beneficial but not strictly required if you supplement well.
What size tank, and how many can I keep?
A planted bioactive vivarium around 18×18×18 in suits a small group, but stocking is species-dependent — some are territorial. Research your exact species before grouping.
Feeding
What do dart frogs eat, and how do I culture fruit flies?
Flightless fruit flies are the staple, plus springtails, dusted with calcium/vitamins. Keep a rotation of fruit-fly cultures going so you never run out — it’s a normal part of the hobby.
Getting one
Which species suit beginners, and can I mix them?
Start with tincs, leucs, or auratus — hardy and captive-bred. Never mix species (disease, hybridisation, aggression). Buy captive-bred from a responsible breeder.
💚 Dart frogs feel intimidating at first, but they’re mostly a humidity and fruit-fly hobby. Get the vivarium stable and they’re hardy little gems. No question is too basic to ask.

Common questions
Are captive-bred poison dart frogs poisonous?
No. Poison dart frogs get their toxicity from a wild diet of specific ants and mites, so captive-bred dart frogs raised on fruit flies are not toxic and are safe to keep. Wash your hands before and after any contact anyway, as with any amphibian.
Why is my dart frog hiding all the time and not coming out?
Newly moved frogs hide for days to weeks while they settle, and hiding also increases when humidity is too low, the enclosure is too exposed, or there is too much foot traffic. Make sure humidity is 80 to 100 percent, provide dense planting and leaf litter, and give it quiet time. Persistent hiding with weight loss means check your husbandry.
Why won't my dart frog eat?
Usually the temperature or humidity is off, the food is too large, or the frog is stressed or newly moved. Keep temps 72 to 80F and humidity high, offer appropriately tiny prey like flightless fruit flies, and give a new frog time. Toe-tapping is normal hunting behaviour, not a problem.
What temperature and humidity do poison dart frogs need?
Aim for 72 to 80F during the day, never above about 85F, dropping no lower than about 65F at night, with humidity of 80 to 100 percent maintained by daily misting in a planted bioactive vivarium.
What do poison dart frogs eat?
Flightless fruit flies are the staple, supplemented with springtails and dusted with a calcium and vitamin supplement. Keeping a live fruit-fly culture going is part of dart-frog keeping. Feed most days.
Which poison dart frogs are best for beginners?
Dendrobates tinctorius (tincs), Dendrobates leucomelas (bumblebee), and Dendrobates auratus are the classic hardy beginner species. Always buy captive-bred from a reputable breeder.
Can I keep different dart frog species together?
No. Mixing species risks disease transmission, hybridisation, and aggression, and different species have different needs. Keep one species per vivarium, and check whether your species tolerates groups.
How long do poison dart frogs live?
With good care, poison dart frogs commonly live 10 to 15 years.
