1. Before you buy — research
- Chosen a species that matches my home temperature & space
- Confirmed adult size, lifespan (often 10–20+ yrs) and cost
- Read a full care guide for my exact species
- Checked whether it needs land, water, or both
2. Equipment
- Correctly sized enclosure + secure lid
- Gentle filtration (aquatic) or moist substrate + hide (terrestrial)
- Thermometer (and hygrometer for humidity species)
- Liquid water test kit (aquatic)
- Heating OR cooling plan appropriate to the species
- Dechlorinator, safe substrate (never gravel for axolotls), décor/plants
3. Cycle & prepare (aquatic species)
- Tank fully set up and running with dechlorinated water
- Fishless cycle started (4–8 weeks) — ammonia source added
- Confirmed 0 ammonia + 0 nitrite before adding the animal
- Big water change done just before arrival
4. Buying the animal
- Buying captive-bred from a reputable breeder/shop
- Animal looks healthy (alert, good weight, no injuries/fungus)
- Not kept on gravel / in warm water at the shop (axolotls)
- Have a plan to quarantine before adding to any group
5. First week home
- Acclimated gently; minimal handling
- Testing water daily (aquatic) and watching behaviour
- Offering appropriate food; not worried if it skips a meal or two
- Know the warning signs and where to find an exotics vet
