✅ One of the easiest amphibians to keep well — it mostly sits, burrows, and eats.
🛒 Before you buy
- Several inches of moist coco fibre (NEVER gravel — impaction is the #1 killer)
- A shallow dish of dechlorinated water, changed often
- A thermometer + hygrometer and a secure, ventilated lid
- Feeding tongs — it is an ambush predator that will bite
A healthy one: Rounded (not puffy) body · clear full eyes · smooth skin · a strong feeding response (even if mostly buried).
🚨 See a vet / act now if…
- Swelling like a balloon all over (possible dropsy)
- A bloated belly with no droppings (possible impaction)
- A reddened belly or legs, or a soft jaw / bendy limbs
- Buried for weeks with weight loss
Cool them down, reduce stress, and contact an exotics vet — most issues are reversible if caught early.

- Gravel or loose swallowable substrate
- Overfeeding (obesity/fatty liver)
- Handling (it bites)
🌿 Golden rules (all amphibians)
- Cycle the tank BEFORE the animal (ammonia = 0).
- Always dechlorinate tap water.
- Cool beats warm — most amphibians are cool/cold species.
- Look, don’t handle — their skin absorbs oils & soaps.
- Buy captive-bred, never wild-caught. Quarantine new arrivals.
- Never release a pet into the wild (it spreads disease).
- A real setup costs more than the animal — budget for it.
