🛒 Before you buy
- To CHECK LOCAL LAW — protected in some countries (captive-bred only, never wild-caught)
- A terrarium with deep soil to burrow
- A shallow dechlorinated water dish + a hide
- A cool spot out of direct sun
A healthy one: Clear eyes · good weight · active at dusk · no lumps or sores.
🚨 See a vet / act now if…
- Cloudy or swollen eyes
- Bloating or not eating
- Red belly or lethargy
- Straining or prolapse
Cool them down, reduce stress, and contact an exotics vet — most issues are reversible if caught early.

- Handling then touching your face (mild toxins — wash hands)
- A warm, dry tank
🌿 Golden rules (all amphibians)
- Cycle the tank BEFORE the animal (ammonia = 0).
- Always dechlorinate tap water.
- Cool beats warm — most amphibians are cool/cold species.
- Look, don’t handle — their skin absorbs oils & soaps.
- Buy captive-bred, never wild-caught. Quarantine new arrivals.
- Never release a pet into the wild (it spreads disease).
- A real setup costs more than the animal — budget for it.
