🛒 Before you buy
- To know its life stage — terrestrial 'red eft' vs aquatic adult — and set up accordingly
- A cool, dechlorinated aquatic tank with a land area + a secure lid
- Live plants for cover
- Captive-bred where possible (never take protected wild populations)
A healthy one: Efts: bright orange, plump, active on land · adults: olive with red spots, using the water.

- Floating or bloating
- Not eating, or weight loss
- Skin fungus or lesions
- Adults staying out of the water persistently
Cool them down, reduce stress, and contact an exotics vet — most issues are reversible if caught early.

- Housing with fish or other species
🌿 Golden rules (all amphibians)
- Cycle the tank BEFORE the animal (ammonia = 0).
- Always dechlorinate tap water.
- Cool beats warm — most amphibians are cool/cold species.
- Look, don’t handle — their skin absorbs oils & soaps.
- Buy captive-bred, never wild-caught. Quarantine new arrivals.
- Never release a pet into the wild (it spreads disease).
- A real setup costs more than the animal — budget for it.
